When you are assigned to write a research paper, you need to understand that this project will take a lot of time to complete. You will need to know the basic steps in order to complete this job successfully. It would be a shame to do all of the work, and then to find out that you have done it incorrectly.
Pick a topic- if you are lucky, the teacher will let you pick your own topic. If you are assigned a topic, then you have less luxury in determining the content. You can still approach the topic with your own unique viewpoint.
Write a thesis statement- once you pick the subject or are assigned the subject, and then you must compose a thesis statement. This will be one or several sentences that include the main points and the direction of the paper. It needs to be rather simple and very easy to understand. If you lose your audience with your first paragraph, then the paper can’t be successful.
Research- you will want to use academic sources. While most students want to do a general online search, this may generate some non-credible hits. Use academic databases for realizable, valid, and academic sources. Doing this from the start will save you a lot of heartache in the long run.
Make an outline- the next step will be for you to make an outline. The outline will serve as a roadmap to the end of the paper. There are two types of outlines. There is the sentence outline, which allows sentences throughout the document. Then there is the topic outline, which only lets you have sentences for the gouges and thesis statement. Everything has to be written in fragments and phrases.
Write a rough draft-the next step is to write a rough draft of the research paper. There may be several rough drafts in the process. This is to be expected and it should not alarm you that you end up with several rough drafts before you are happy with the product. Some teachers ask for the rough draft to be submitted. You need to find out if this is a requirement.
Proofread and edit-this is a very important step, so be careful. If your teacher reviewed your rough draft and made comments, then you need to fix the errors. If he or she did not do this, then you have to proof or edit on your own. If you do not feel qualified to do this, then you can hire a professional to do this. Whatever route you take, the most important thing to do is to not make new errors, as you correct the noted mistakes.
Write the final draft- now you are ready for the final draft. In actuality, you have done much of this when you proofed and edited. Now you just need to polish the paper and then submit it.
